2021.12.06 18:49 Sinheldrin [Spoilers] Jack Reacher, the emotional impact around the shooting

Spoilers about Jack Reacher
So, I watched Jack Reacher yesterday (the first one, don't watch the second one), which was enjoyable and a pretty good movie. I wanted to talk about one scene in particular, or rather a set of scenes building up to an emotional moment. It's about the second time you sees the shooting, after Helen explains what she learnt about the victims.
I actually cried when that scene ended, and, looking back, I feel like it was masterfully crafted. And possibly destroyed in the next scene. So I wanted to lay it out in writing and maybe get a few opinions on the matter.
The event sequence Let me recount the relevant events:

The craft The opening feels like a classical start to action movies: the bad guy rolls up, does his thing with cold professionalism in a quiet, impersonal sequence. Here, we see the shooter look through his scope, and we wait for the tragedy to start. We hold our breath when he aims at a woman with a kid, like it's his target. Then he goes over several people, before he finally shoots several, seemingly at random. It happens at a distance, we get the loud sound of the shot, then a glimpse of the victim falling, then the next. Screams start after a moment, and again are far from our perspective. We see no blood.
The whole scene is focused on the shooter, making a point of showing exactly what he does and all of what he does. The victims are visible, but they are a secondary concern in the direction. Before re-watching it to write this, I thought I remembered no gun sounds and not seeing the victims falling. That could have been a change to make the whole thing even colder.
However, when we see the scene again, we just got all the victims' stories. Each one is a bystander, someone with a family, a story, issues and hopes, a life that got suddenly terminated. This time, we see the victims in close-ups. Ending with the nanny running away carrying the kid, telling her repeatedly "We're gonna be okay", before it fades to black. When that happens, we don't get the cold killing of a passerby, who happened to be with a child for more emotional impact, instead we see a person running for their life, intent on protecting a kid, the girl who loved her nanny and had asked her to go shopping for her birthday, when she was supposed to be on a trip to China. And now, it hurts.
I felt like this was a beautiful orchestration, by showing first the event as usually depicted in action movies, an indiscriminate shooting to set up the villain, only to make a detour to introduce us to the victims, before making us relive the scene, with a much more personal viewpoint.
The disruption But then, we get the next scene: Jack and Helen continue talking in a motel room, while Jack is shirtless, washing his shirt. The discussion is emotional still, as we see Helen believe that Jack asked her to do that to feel wrong about defending the shooter. Helen remarks on the fact he is shirtless, stares and gets befuddled. The discussion ends, Helen thinks Jack is trying to have sex with her, but he just has her leave, and she exits, visibly disconcerted and a little ashamed.
So, I am not quite sure what this scene is supposed to do. I just thought it was a massive and insensitive tone shift, from emotional death drama to a gratuitous James Bond style sexy scene, and that it destroyed the impact and emotion in the previous scene.
Maybe it was on purpose, a contrast to highlight the drama even more and ridicule the cliché scene. Maybe it was just a scene and the next one, and it happened to be like that in the final cut, something that happened without much meaning but that I decided was offending, out-of-place or just bad taste.
In the end, did the film aim to be an action movie, entertaining and funny, with a surprising emotional touch? Or an action thriller, dark and tragic, with maybe too much funny lines and a stereotypical battle as the ending? Or, well, in the middle, an intentional mix, to blur the lines and make people question?
What do you think?

2021.12.06 18:49 LimitGroundbreaking2 Anyone else struggle with mental health that find it impedes on your enthusiasm to prevent waste?

I have gotten my girlfriend to recycle but mentally neither of us have been doing well lately which results in us needing to use disposable plates and silverware or eating out which in itself develops more waste. I hate that my inability to accomplish task makes more waste then in turn I feel even worse about it all.

2021.12.06 18:49 jenthehenmfc Trach: Difficulty with Speaking Valve

My mom had her second stroke the very end of august and due to aspirating on fluids or something, was intubated for about a day and then the doctors recommended a trach. They spoke like this would be great and you can still speak and eat just fine with it and it doesn’t have to be permanent blah blah. I’m not even sure my mom was ever on a ventilator but sometimes has gotten oxygen? She’s definitely been breathing “on her own” for months.
Near the middle - end of September I remember a speech therapist trying a valve and she really struggled with it and could only do maybe 5 minutes … now we’re almost 3 months later and it sounds like that’s still more or less where we are. Why would it be so difficult to use the valve if she can breathe on her own? I thought we’d have made more progress by now (or if she was that bad she would have passed).
I just feel very “what the heck are we even doing” when we’re on month 3 of therapy and she can sit up I guess and do the valve for a few minutes and hasn’t passed swallow tests. I don’t think the therapists are bad or not trying and the facility where she is seems good, so I don’t think that’s the problem but like … I’m starting to feel like all the interventions were a mistake but the doctors make you feel like you’re basically killing your family member if you don’t agree to do the trach, the peg tube, etc. But like … she can’t live like this she wouldn’t want to live like this. I guess I didn’t realize there was all this “in between” being OK and “pulling the plug” you know.

2021.12.06 18:49 devenkeyser What should I expect?

So I’ve never seen naruto, I’ve only played the games. But it seems like an interesting show. Basically as the title says, my question is what should I expect from the show? Is it a slow and boring start? How long till things start to get interesting? Are there a lot of “filler” episodes throughout the seasons?

I have got a few decent desperado rolls from playing solo queue trials and while fun when I get desperado proc'd, my overall effectiveness is pretty low.
